Travel guide Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon)
3 Januar 2024
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, has been known by its current name since the end of the war between the North and South. The city's attractions include the Notre Dame Basilica, which was built entirely from materials imported from France, and the historic 19th-century General Post Office.
With 9 million inhabitants, HCMC is a city full of life and energy. The endless stream of motorbikes is a defining feature of the street scene. If you want to cross the road, you need patience: walk slowly, look at the traffic, and you'll be fine!

What should you do in Ho Chi Minh City and surroundings?
Mekong-Delta:
A tour of the Mekong Delta is an absolute highlight. Boat trips with an overnight stay are a particularly good way to experience the region up close. We recommend Bassac Cruises https://mekongcruise.com/cruise/bassac-cruise.html
Cu Chi Tunnels:
The impressive tunnel system from the time of the Vietnam War is a real must-see. It's best to take a speedboat there – at 7 o'clock in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds. Book a tour with Les Rives Experience
District 2:
I used to live here myself, and it's my favourite. Over the years, District 2 has come to offer everything that used to be found only in the city centre. I recommend starting at the In The Mood Saigon concept store and strolling along the streets. You should also visit Wish Vietnam, run by my friend Brad and his charming Japanese wife Koto.
China Town
Also known as Chợ Lớn, the Chinese Quarter in Ho Chi Minh City combines Vietnamese and Chinese cultures. You can feel the long history of the community in the temples, markets and tea houses. The Bình Tây market, with its spices and street food, is particularly lively. A stroll here is a journey through colours, flavours and traditions.
Where should I stay?
Park Hyatt Saigon:
An absolute classic and, in our opinion, the finest choice in District 1. This hotel exudes the charm of old Saigon, offering a prime location, elegant décor, a stunning swimming pool, a well-equipped gym, and a luxurious spa. Plus, it serves one of the best breakfasts in town.
La Casita Saigon:
This charming boutique hotel is run by Hoa and her husband. It feels like a ‘home away from home’. The courtyard pool is the perfect place to relax. This used to be a pizzeria – a nostalgic place for long-time fans of Saigon www.lacasitasaigon.com and email: lacasitasaigon@yahoo.comMia Saigon
For those who like a little more luxury, I can recommend the Mia Hotel. Beautifully situated on the Saigon River and equipped with a fitness centre, pool and spa. This hotel is in District 2 and sits a bit away from the hectic streets of Saigon. https://www.miasaigon.com/

What to buy?
Cashew nuts
A classic that I buy every time. The nuts from the Ben Thanh market are particularly good.
Marou
Chocolate:
A real insider tip and a popular souvenir.
Embroidery and lacquerware:
Authentic craftsmanship representing Vietnam.
Non La
(Vietnamese hat):
A classic, you'll find all over the city
What not to miss?
Vespa tours:
For me, the undisputed highlight! Cruising the streets of Saigon on a Vespa is an unforgettable experience. You get to know the people and discover places you wouldn't otherwise see. Companies like XO Tours are special, with only women drivers, https://xotours.vn/ or https://vespaadventures.com/
When to go to Ho Chi Minh City?
The best time to travel is from November to April. It is less humid and it rains less often. However, climate change is also affecting weather patterns here. My ‘go to’ site to check which region is best to visit at what time is: https://www.selectiveasia.com/weather/january
Favourite restaurants and Cafes:
- Quan Bui and Laang: Our all-time favourite for Vietnamese food.
- Cuc Gach Quan (The Architect’s House): Famous after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited. The food is fantastic!
- Brix: Trendy spots with great food.
- Propaganda: Great restaurant near the cathedral and the post office.
- Nha Hang Ngon: Hang out for locals and expats alike. The original idea was to reunite street food in a clean space.
- Quince und Yunka: Modern restaurants for special occasions.
